Multi-Channel Spatial Audio Solution

GOWIN Semiconductor has developed a Multi-Channel Spatial Audio Solution for consumer audio products such as smart speakers, soundbars, TVs and gaming monitors. The solution is designed to create an immersive surround sound experience from a single loudspeaker array, without the need for a headset.

The technology uses psychoacoustic processing to generate spatially encoded sound waves for each ear. According to GOWIN, this makes it possible to deliver a wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling immersive audio experience that is effective for many listeners across a larger area.

More surround sound from less hardware

Instead of assigning individual channels to individual speakers, the GOWIN algorithm drives all amplifiers and speakers with all channels at the same time. This allows the complete speaker array to contribute to each channel, helping designers create compact multi-channel audio products with higher sound pressure levels and reduced hardware complexity.

The solution supports different speaker configurations, including linear arrays with 8 or more speakers and 3D-cluster arrays designed to fit into a cylindrical shape. GOWIN specifies linear arrays with 1.75 inch or greater speaker spacing and an array width of 14 inch or more. For 3D-cluster arrays, the reference dimensions are approximately 8 inch diameter and 8 inch height.

Designed for cost-effective implementation

GOWIN’s signal processing architecture is aimed at easy integration into cost-effective consumer products. The input is compatible with typical upstream modules used in AV receivers and other consumer audio products, while the output is compatible with many 2-channel and 4-channel Class-D power amplifier ICs. The solution can also operate as a co-processor, reducing the need for support from other system resources.

Chip architecture

The chip architecture is fully digital and operates at a relatively low 24.576 MHz clock frequency. Volume controls, biquad parametric EQ filters and matrix filters are programmed via I2C. The design requires minimal peripheral circuitry, such as a clock oscillator and power supplies, and only limited glue logic and support circuitry.
